PSHE at Hollydale

At Hollydale Primary School we use two different schemes of work to support the teaching Personal, Health and Social Education. The schemes we use are Jigsaw and The Christopher Winter project.

Jigsaw consists of 6 puzzles containing 6 Pieces (lessons). The six puzzles in Jigsaw are;

Autumn 1: Being Me in My World
Autumn 2: Celebrating Difference (including Anti-Bullying)
Spring 1: Dreams and Goals
Spring 2: Healthy Me
Summer 1: Relationships
Summer 2: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world. Children learn and develop strategies for keeping themselves physically and emotionally safe including road safety, safety in the environment and safety online.

As well as ensuring both coverage and progression, the curriculum is thoughtfully designed to provide broad, balanced, deep and contextualised learning experiences.

The school is inclusive and provides a stimulating environment that meets the needs of all learners. Pupils at all levels are helped to achieve their potential irrespective of their starting points.

RSHE – Relationship, Sex and Health Education:

A curriculum through which children explore the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up. They learn about positive relationships, growth and changes, as well as physical and mental health.

The Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSE) curriculum became statutory in September 2020. Relationships and Sex Education supports and guides children and young people in lifelong learning about relationships, emotions, the human biology of sex and sexuality. It is compulsory for all primary school children to receive relationship education. At Grange we follow the Christopher Winter’s Project. This is a scheme of work that includes lesson plans and teaching materials for Reception to Year 6. It builds on learning from previous years and revisits topics each year to cover them in greater depth. It includes lesson material on topics such as keeping clean, families, gender differences, personal space, puberty, relationships and many other topics. The Christopher Winter’s Project resources and lessons plans are quality-assured by the PSHE Association and the DFE to best support children along their learning journey of Relationships, Sex and Health Education.  Our RSE curriculum links in with our science curriculum and Years 1 to 5 will have a total of 3 lessons delivered over the course of the year while year 6 will have 4 lessons. Details of the lessons can be found on the curriculum map.
